May: Chasing Cupcakes

Chasing Cupcakes
How one broke, fat girl transformed her life (and how you can, too)
Elizabeth Benton

This is hands down the best book I have read all year.  I have my highlighter notes to prove it. The text is looking a lot more pink because of it! Elizabeth Benton shares so many wise words, I didn't want this book to end.  If you are feeling trapped in your own life, (you know you want to change but feel limited and overwhelmed) you have got to read this book.  Elizabeth Benton teaches us the exact reason we find it so hard to change our life and exactly what we need to do to rewrite our life story.  It might not be easy but it is simple.

April: The Compound Effect

The Compound Effect
Jumpstart you income, your life, your success
Darren Hardy

This book explains in very simple terms how to get the success you desire and the life you deserve.  One thing I have learnt as I have created more success in my personal life & business is that success doesn't just happen because I'm lucky or have freakishly good looks (haha did you pick that up), it is because of the choices I have made and the habits I have developed.  Darren Hardy describes this as the compound effect and breaks it down in 6 simple chapters.

February: Confidence Feels Like Sh*t

Confidence Feels Like Sh*t
The truth about confidence and what it really takes to create it
Erika Cramer

I cannot think of a better book to kick off book club for 2021!

Confidence or lack of it affects so many women.  Having confidence can transform your life and the relationship you have with yourself.  It's such a useful emotion to have when we are going after our goals.  So why do so many of us struggle with not feeling like we have enough confidence??

"It's time to stop believing that confidence is reserved for the lucky ones, the popular ones or the "pretty ones."  Confidence is available to each and every one of us."

Are you ready to do what it takes to create it?

I cannot wait for you to learn about all the goodness in this book and start applying it in your life.

Let's work on increasing our confidence together and talk all about it at book club.

November: The Year of Less

The Year of Less
How I stopped shopping, gave away my belongings, and discovered life is worth more than anything you can buy in a store
Cait Flanders

Do you have more stuff than money?  What are you holding on to?

In this compelling story, Cait shares what happens when money, minimalism, and mindfulness cross paths.

'When she realised that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy- only keeping her from meeting her goals- she set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year.

The Year of Less documents Cait's life for twelve months during which she bought only consumables: toiletries, gas for her car. Along the way, she decluttered her apartment and got rid of 70 percent of her belongings.'

October: Time Warrior

Time Warrior
How to defeat procrastination, people-pleasing, self-doubt, over-commitment, broken promises and chaos
Steve Chandler

One of the major components to living a life on purpose is the ability to manage your time.  However, for many of us having enough time is a constant battle.  I chose this book for book club this month because the ability to manage our time is the secret sauce to creating a life on purpose.

As the blurb states:

'Create your day the time warrior way

Time Warrior is a revolutionary, non-linear approach for dealing with time.  In this age of instant global connection to everyone and everything, your 'war' is against interruption and distraction.

The 'violence' in the word 'warrior' was intended.  For although the work you do can be slow and easy, to master non-linear time you must pull out your sword ahead of time to carve out periods of space and silence.'

August: You are a Badass at Making Money

You are a Badass at Making Money
Master the Mindset of Wealth
Jen Sincero

This book is a lot of fun and full of pearls of wisdom, delivered in a relatable and quirky style.

Although there is no doubt this book fits into the self help/personal development genre, Jen manages to keep it light hearted and easy to digest, as we follow her on her journey to making the big bucks.

She tells a good story and definitely kept me entertained but it's more than just funny stories; she teaches us how to uncover what is holding us back from making money and how to tap into our natural ability to grow rich.  Each chapter concludes with an exercise to work on mastering the mindset of wealth.

Personally I think these kind of books are easy to consume and gloss over.  They are nice to read and get me feeling motivated.  However, that is not enough and nothing will change unless you actually apply what you learn.

I believe this book has the potential to have an impact if you do the exercises at the end of each chapter and apply what you learn.

Here's my suggestion how to do that.

  1. Pearls of wisdom: underline anything new or interesting you come across
  2. New concepts: look out for new concepts and apply them, try out what Jen suggests
  3. Questions: What questions does the book raise?  Write them down and write down any questions that come up for you when reading

You can get a copy of the book >>here<<.

I look forward to hanging out with you in book club this month and being badasses together!

June: Millionaire Teacher

Millionaire Teacher
The Nine Rules of Wealth You Should Have Learned in School
Andrew Hallam

Obviously, being a former teacher, there is no chance I would pass up a book with the title Millionaire Teacher!

I was not disappointed.

I know a lot of people have a desire to invest in shares but have a road block because they don’t understand it or don’t have any clue as to where to start.

This book is your answer.

Millionaire Teacher is an excellent guide for learning about investing in shares. Andrew doesn’t try to teach you how to ‘beat the market’ or how to ‘pick the best shares’. This book teaches simple strategies for how to invest in the share market without having to be a financial expert. Andrew explains how the share market works and how to invest in a simple and systematic way that minimises risk and maximises returns.

There are no fancy strategies or trading going on here. In simple laymen’s terms, Andrew explains index funds, bonds and exchange traded funds (ETF) and how to invest in them.

He outlines specific strategies and funds that can be invested in, in America, Canada, Great Britain, Singapore and Australia.

What surprised me was how simple investing can be, and Andrew has such a relatable and down to earth nature.  I especially enjoyed how he uses Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as an analogy for how the stock market works.

I found this book very practical and informative. I especially appreciated the information on why it is important to invest in low cost funds and how paying higher fees can have a significant effect on the return of your investment.  Maybe I’m a little bias because of my former occupation but I love love love that Andrew was a school teacher and not only did he educate himself and take responsibility for his own finances he also went out of his way to educate others. What a guy!

Seriously ladies, if you want to learn how to invest in the share market and do it in a simple and effective way that minimises risk, get this book and join in for book club this month so we can talk all about it and learn together.

May: Everything is Figureoutable

Everything is Figureoutable
Marie Forleo

If you want to make change in your life but you feel like you lack the confidence, time or money then this is the book for you.

I was initially attracted to this book as I listen to Marie's podcast on and off and I love her sass and can do attitude.  But it was the title that really drew me in and made it a yes when deciding to buy and read it.

Everything is figureoutable; if there was ever a time to embrace this concept, it is most certainly now.  So many people are experiencing fear and uncertainty in this current world climate.  We can't change the circumstances of the covid19 pandemic, it is happening.  But we can absolutely change and control the way we think about it and handle it.

Have to work from home- no problem everything is figureoutable.
Lost your job temporarily- no problem everything is figureoutable.
Can't get onions from the supermarket- no problem everything is figureoutable.

I don't think Marie had a pandemic in mind when she wrote this book but her message is very transferrable and this is why I selected it for this months book club as I think we could all benefit from a little belief and attitude that everything is figureoutable.

Marie is well known for helping entrepreneurs start or improve their businesses.  I certainly think this book is targeting this audience.  However, what surprised me is really, this is a mindset book and is applicable to anyone faced with a challenge or change they want to make.

She guides us step by step through the book with simple exercises.  First, how to identify what our dream is and second, how to create the belief we need to step into being the person who creates it.  She also dishes out some great advice on how to create more time to put these changes into place.

If you want some actionable steps and a health dose of positivity and tough love, this is the book for you.

If you are unwilling to make change or are offended by the odd 'F' bomb, then I would give this one a miss.

April: Wonder Woman’s Guide to Money

Wonder Woman's Guide to Money
The Busy Woman's Guide to Money Management and Wealth Building
Natasha Janssens

Written by a working mum of two, the Wonder Woman's Guide to Money addresses the plight of the modern-day 'Wonder Woman' and helps her shift the way she feels about money forever by providing the tools, strategies and insight to take control of her financial future.

The growing pressure on today's woman to 'do it all' is immense.  She has a career, runs the household and is the primary caregiver of her children, while still being held to outdated standards about her appearance and role in society.  Moreover, despite being the primary household spenders, research has found that women tend to shy away from money matters and tend to have less financial confidence than men.  Despite increasing gender equality and closing the gender pay gap, progress is slow, and in some respects, non-existent.  In fact, a recent UBS study found that millennial women- more than any other generation - are leaving investing and financial planning decisions to their husbands and partners.  A decision that can leave many women in very vulnerable positions when things don't go to plan.

This book is a stepping stone to getting your finances on track.  Written by a woman for women.

March: Spenditude

Spenditude
A life-changing attitude to money
Paul Gordan & Janine Robertson

There are a lot of books out there in the personal finance world that give you actionable steps to start managing your money and looking after it, to make more and support yourself in retirement.  However, one very important aspect that is often left out of these books is our mindset and our attitude towards money.  For example if you are an emotional eater, it doesn't matter how much exercise you do, if you always turn to food for comfort, you are never going to get in shape.  You first have to address the mindset.  It's exactly the same with money.  You can put strategies in place to improve your finances but again unless you examine what's happening on the inside- in our mind and our attitude towards money, it is going to be very hard to sustain long term healthy money habits.  Here is where Spenditude comes in and why it is such an important book to read.  You are not going to learn any get rich quick strategies here but what you will learn is how to first identify what your attitude towards money is and then how you can go about making change to develop the 'spenditude' you desire.  This book is a slow burn that I encourage you to come back to for a second read.  Please do not underestimate the importance of your thoughts, beliefs, mindset or 'spenditude' towards money.  Becoming aware of your spenditude and learning how to change it is life changing!  Get this book in your eyeballs!
